OF THE CONSULS ON
THE BACCHANALIA ( 186 BC ) |

Livy 39, 17, 3 :
After the decree of the Senate on the Bacchanalia, the consuls ordered
minor magistrates and officials to search for the priests of this cult,
to see that no celebration of the rites should be held, and to police
the City ( Livy 39, 14, 9-10 ), and they convoked an informal
meeting (contio) of the people to tell the citizens about the
conspiracy and to acquaint them with the measures adopted to suppress
the cult ( Livy 39, 15, 1-39, 17, 2 ). Then they issued the
following edict. |
ENGLISH TRANSLATION. |
No
person shall sell or buy anything for the purpose of flight. No person
shall harbor, shall conceal, shall aid by any assistance the fugitives. |
